An organization's foundational IT infastructure is primarily comprised of mission-critical Identity and Access services, and at most organizations worldwide, these two mission-critical services are delivered by Microsoft Active Directory.

At such organizations, the entirety of an organization's primary identities (domain user accounts) and computing devices (domain computer accounts) and their credentials, as well as the entirety of all security groups used to provision access to the entirety of the organization's digital assets are stored, managed and secured in Active Directory.

Each one of these domain user accounts, computer accounts and security groups is protected by an Active Directory access control list (ACL), and together an ocean of Active Directory security permissions, that collectively resides inside these ACLs, governs and determines exactly who has what access to and on each of these vital organizational assets.

The biggest challenge in Active Directory Security is that it is very difficult to be able to accurately determine exactly who has what access to which objects in Active Directory, making it very difficult to adequately secure Active Directory, and it is this challenge that results in excessive access and escalation paths, the exploitation of which results in huge breaches.
